Cellist Shauna Rolston and pianist Heather Schmidt will bring their collaborative musical magic to the Raven's CRy Theatre this Sunday.
Coast Recital Society (CRS) presents the dynamic duo in concert at 2:30 p.m. Before the concert at 1:30 p.m. the musicians will discuss their repertoire, which includes works by Manuel de Falla, Arvo Part, Heather Schmidt, Sergei Rachmaninov and David Popper.
"Shauna Rolston and Heather Schmidt have individual, brilliant careers," said CRS artistic director, Frances Heinsheimer Wainwright. "As a duo in performance, they bring an especially exciting musical dialogue to the stage."
Rolston and Schmidt began performing together in 2002. Their association began in 1998 when Schmidt, also a composer, was commissioned to write a work for Rolston. In 2003, they were invited by the Governor General to perform as part of Canada's state delegation visit to Finland and Iceland. Since 2004, they have toured throughout North America.
Rolston and Schmidt are considered to be among the most compelling musicians of their generation. Rolston has been described as impressive, fearless, colourul and provocative. She has been praised for the ease and naturalness of her technique, her pure intonation , her colour and her ability to produce a huge tone and to play with great delicacy. She performs regularly around the world appearing in recital and concerto engagements.
Similarly, Schmidt has received top recognition for her performances, broadcasts, commissions and awards throughout North and South America and Europe. She performs extensively as a soloist of both contemporary and standard repertoire.
