SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS ANNOUNCED  – The Coast Reporter – June 4, 2010

Twelve young Sunshine Coast classical music students were recently recognized by the Coast Recital Society (CRS) at the society’s annual general meeting at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt. These annual awards are presented to local music students as part of the CRS community outreach program. Gibsons’ violist Erin MacDonald received the Ross Brougham Scholarship in the amount of $500. This scholarship is awarded annually to the student receiving the highest grade from the CRS scholarship adjudicators. Ross Brougham served the CRS in various positions during his long association with the society, including treasurer, chair of the scholarship committee and program annotator.

Holly Beckmyer from Roberts Creek was awarded $400. Recipients of $300 awards were Anneke Bonser, Liam Bonser, Kiel Strang and Talia Strang from Roberts Creek; Maya Broeke from Gibsons; and Oliver Gidora from Halfmoon Bay. Winners of $200 awards were Emily Wood and Henry Wood from Roberts Creek and Julie Shibasaka from Langdale. Ruby Riesco from Gibsons was awarded $150.

The members of the scholarship committee are: John Storer, Jane Whiteley, Elise Buque, Mary Lea Bell, Wendy Humphries Tebbutt and Frances Heinsheimer Wainwright.

The CRS also continued its tradition of awarding scholarships through the S.C. Festival of the Performing Arts. Four CRS adjudicator’s choice festival awards of $200 each were awarded this year to Elena Kohuch (piano); Flannery Hay-Roe (percussion, woodwinds brass); Oliver Gidora (strings) and Pamela Wood (voice.)

CRS scholarships applications are accepted annually at the end of February and are open to classical music students, 25 years or younger. More information is available on the CRS website at www.coastrecitalsociety.ca.
