OUTSTANDING PIANIST RETURNS – The Coast Reporter – October 1, 2010

Angela Cheng, one of Canada’s most brilliant and beloved pianists, returns to the Coast Recital Society (CRS) this Sunday afternoon, Oct. 3. The concert at the Raven’s Cry Theatre in Sechelt begins at 2:30 p.m. with a pre-concert chat at 1:30.

Her program includes music by Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin. Cheng’s artistry is marked by a unique blend of superb musicianship, remarkable technique and tonal beauty.

Gold medal winner at the 1986 Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Masters Competition, she was awarded first prize at the prestigious Montreal International Piano Competition in 1988. For her outstanding interpretations of Mozart, she received the Medal of Excellence at the Mozarteum in Salzburg in 1991.

“Angela Cheng is an esteemed artist who excels in a broad range of keyboard repertoire,” said CRS artistic director Frances Heinsheimer Wainwright. “Wherever she performs, she establishes a truly special rapport with her audience, and we know that our CRS audience will be delighted to welcome her back to the Sunshine Coast.”

While on the Coast, Cheng will also give two concerts as part of the CRS Artists in the Community outreach program performing for students from Chatelech Secondary School and L’École du Pacifique, and also for residents at Shorncliffe Village Care Home.

An avid recitalist, Cheng appears regularly on recital series throughout the United States and Canada. She has collaborated with numerous chamber ensembles including the Takács, Colorado and Vogler Quartets, and recently performed with the Pinchas Zuckerman Chamber Players in an extensive tour that included concerts in Europe and South America. Her festival appearances include Chautauqua, Colorado, Houston, Vancouver and the Festival International de Lanaudière.
