“a magical trio and a rare musical delight”

The Garibaldi Trio, formed at UBC in 2022 at the behest of the Coast Recital Society is a most promising new ensemble, and the Coast Recital Society is very proud to have presented their debut concert in its 2022-2023 season. The trio consists of clarinetist Jose Franch-Ballester (FrAHnk Bai-yess-TAIR); violist Marina Thibault; and pianist David Fung.

The multi-award-winning Spanish clarinetist Jose Franch-Ballester is considered one of the finest classical soloists and chamber music artists of his generation. He has been hailed for his “technical wizardry and tireless enthusiasm” (The New York Times), his “rich, resonant tone” (Birmingham News), and his “subtle and consummate artistry.”

Violist Marina Thibeault has delighted audiences across Canada, the United States, and Europe with her elegant, spellbinding performances and engaging presence. Her 2020 JUNO award-nominated album ELLES honours groundbreaking women composers from Clara Schumann to the present day.

Praised by The Washington Post for his “ravishing and simply gorgeous” performances, pianist David Fung is widely recognized for interpretations that are elegant and refined, yet intensely poetic and uncommonly expressive.

As accomplished faculty members at UBC, the Garibaldi Trio brings a wealth of experience and expertise to their performances, creating a rich and dynamic musical experience for their audiences.
