The Coast Recital Society’s outreach programming is designed to broaden and deepen our artistic impact within our community.

Through our Artists in the Community program, musicians presented in our main concert series perform in schools and eldercare residences on the Sunshine Coast, and offer master classes and workshops to Sunshine Coast music students.

Our Scholarship program encourages the study of classical music by awarding annual scholarships to local youth studying classical music.

The Coast Recital Society also supports the annual Highlights Concert of the Sunshine Coast Festival of the Performing Arts, and sponsors four awards annually in the following categories: bowed strings, piano, voice and woodwinds & brass.

ARTISTS IN THE COMMUNITY

The Coast Recital Society supports several initiatives that facilitate exposure of our performing artists to the Sunshine Coast community.

Scholarships

Coast Recital Society Scholarships are available to students from the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia who wish to further their classical music education. Funds for these scholarships are raised from tickets returned for resale by subscribers who are unable to use them, and commissions from the sale of CDs.

The Program: The Coast Recital Society holds auditions each year to encourage Sunshine Coast students of classical music in their studies. Auditions are for students at intermediate and advanced levels, whether studying on the Sunshine Coast or attending post-secondary institutions off the Sunshine Coast. Students aged 10 to 25 who have lived on the Sunshine Coast are eligible.

Our aim is to encourage study and performance of classical music, activities that can continue throughout life. Auditions give an opportunity to perform, and both students and teachers have found that the experience can build ongoing confidence and ability. Modest awards are available for highly rated auditions: we regard these as gestures of encouragement rather than prizes for competition, and the available amount of money varies greatly from year to year.

Allan Crane Award: This award is offered periodically when an applicant pursuing post-secondary music studies performs with exceptional merit. The award is named in honour of the founder of the Coast Recital Society.

Ross Brougham Award: This award is offered annually to a student displaying outstanding musicianship. The CRS established its scholarship program in 2004 and this award honours the chair of the first CRS scholarship committee.

Elise Buqué Award: This award is offered periodically to a student displaying significant development in performance and is named after Elise Buqué, a recently retired board member and generous supporter of the CRS scholarship program.

Audition Pieces: Two short, contrasting pieces of classical music must be performed with accompaniment unless especially composed/arranged to be played unaccompanied. Total performance time will not exceed ten minutes.

Classical Music: We understand classical music to include many styles from many musical periods, following established forms and based on a compositional style rooted in notation. The Royal Conservatory Certificate Program syllabi, for example, are commonly used to indicate suitable classical pieces for various levels of development, but the Coast Recital Society will make the final decision. Pieces that would easily be identified as folk, jazz, or pop will not qualify, although differences can be subtle and cross-influences are many. If there is any doubt about whether a piece will qualify for the auditions, contact the CRS as early as possible for a decision.

Application forms pdf (2027-scholarship-application-form.pdf) are due by February 14th.

All auditions in 2027 will be performed live on Mar 6 at the Highland Centre in Gibsons. Unedited video submissions will only be accepted by prior approval of the Scholarship committee.

Accompanists: We understand that the cost of an accompanist may be a financial hardship for some students. CRS offers a subsidy of up to $60.00 for this purpose, independent of any award.
